For a long time, the mainstream of small boats has been composite boats (rigid-hull inflatable boats, hereinafter referred to as RIBs), rubber boats, FRP boats, and aluminum boats, each of which has its own weaknesses. RIBs and rubber boats are prone to punctures upon collision, and the degradation of rubber materials is a concern. FRP boats may develop cracks during collisions, and there are environmental concerns regarding their disposal. Lightweight aluminum boats corrode when they react with seawater and chemicals. Moreover, the materials of the aforementioned boats are heavier than water, so they sink if they lack buoyancy, and repair costs in case of damage are not cheap. However, the new polyethylene boat 'Whaly' is molded entirely from UV-resistant materials, eliminating the need for repairs due to aging, and it does not corrode even when stored in a moored state, allowing for long-term operation. It also has about five times the impact resistance compared to conventional FRP boats. Additionally, while it possesses buoyancy and stability similar to RIBs, its material is lighter than water, and due to its double-hull structure, it is unlikely to sink even if damaged.
